Automatic Writing

If you’ve ever seen it, Automatic Writing is a really interesting thing to watch. Someone sits down with a pen, relaxes their mind… and then something else seems to take over. The hand begins to write as though following an invisible line of thought.

What makes automatic writing so interesting is that it feels like a conversation happening beneath the surface – without spoken words. Just writing on a page.

Automatic Writing became popular during the Spiritualist movement, where it was often used as a form of mediumship. But in history, ancient cultures described scribes, prophets, and shamans in trance-like states recording messages that felt “given” rather than created.

Do you know that Automatic Writing has two different forms?

The first form is subconscious release.
This is where the person goes into a deeply relaxed state. They begin to write what looks more like something that is symbolic, emotional, or expressive.
It seems to be more from a place of impressions, maybe suppressed memories, or emotions connected to a location.

The second form is mediumistic communication.
In these cases, the person says they feel some sort of presence (not possession). Something that is kind and gentle. Like a type of guidance. They can begin to write names, phrases, draw images. Information they could not have known. Could it be from spirit communication, psychic perception, or a blend of both? Who knows.

For those who experience Automatic Writing find that the writing style can change — different pressure of the pen or pencil, spacing. Some even start writing with their left hand when they only ever write with their right.

If you do take on a case with someone who considers themselves to be writing automatically, keep a logical mindset. Some people write down scrambled thoughts, personal anxieties, or just your standard simple scribbles. Automatic writing is known to be more about not forcing the right results, but more about allowing them.

Also, individuals can feel vulnerable after an Automatic Writing session and can feel unsure of whether what came through was meaningful.

This is where you can remind them of the following:

  • They are not losing control.

  • They can stop at any time.

  • They can set the intention for communication to cease (however that looks to them)

  • Their wellbeing comes before the information.

Automatic Writing is about connection — whether with the subconscious, with memory, with intuition, or with something beyond the physical.
